Chapter 6
Andrews mysterious death was unclear, but there was enough information to lead her to Backfish in Toon Town. The banking account with the name Mr. Drew, and the reaction received from Vicky was uncomfortably concerning.
Clearly this was more above her head but it wasn't like she wasn't in familiar ground she'll find the culprit and ensure toons will become submissive with their crimes. Andrew, in his early thirties, was poisoned by someone close to him. Had plenty of access into the work building but for whatever reason nobody could get a glimpse of the man's face in the trench coat?
Dots weren't adding up, a terrible thought lingered in the back of her mind, what if they were all on it? It wasn't suited for the case but always a possiblity in all scenarios. Being careful was the most important, because clearly this Mr. Drew wasn't someone to easily get too.
Then again Yona was not known for giving up a challenge. She was going to jump in a pool of sharks regardless of the consequences. After all she was one of the most feared species, who would dare test the patience of a demon? She turned on her heel, the side walk under her heel scratched the bottom.
"Wha-!?" She almost fell harshly down if it weren't for the sudden pull around her waist, a tug giving her realization of whom you had turned her body into. She felt all too stunned, not expecting anyone to have been behind her being how dead it was.
"Careful, wouldn't want a bruised knee" a deep voice teased, the condescending tone made her oddly annoyed. Glancing up to a pair of red eyes, which were already looking back at her curiously. She immediately withdrew their contact, the position his arm was in and left a print in her clothing.
"I didn't mean to bump into you, excuse me" she explained, combing a hand through her white messy locks. Giving herself enough room to not push her hat off. The taller male finally now in her sights, a long black pointed tail stayed a few inches off the ground. His head shaped roundly for his horns to be symmetrical on both sides.
Yona's eyes filtered down to his fine attire, perhaps a friend of Vicky's? Though that wasn't her business, she would only have to assume someone dressed so finely is meant for only one reason to come to this neighborhood.
The demon let a little smirk slip the corner of his lips "Not a problem, I wouldn't want to be arrested" he teased, a harmless joke to lighten the mood. Even if there was no intention behind it, Yona reacted coldly and adjusted her sleeves.
"Well then, thank you for that but I must be going" she got ready to turn and leave, though she hadn't expected she would run into a demon of all toons. Especially such a refined one. She narrowed her eyes, the anxious gut feeling rising from thinking these things.
"My pleasure! Perhaps we will cross paths and I'll get that name of yous, Officer!" He called out with a deep chuckle. His head tilting slightly as she tensed up, her tail whipping around agitatedly with hurried footsteps.
"A .. demon detective around here, hm" he said under his breath, red blood eyes turning to slits before going on his way once more. Doubting they'll meet again.
Yona flagged down an upcoming taxi, shortly returning home safely but handing the taxi driver a little
"Wait here, I'm going to grab a few things before you take me to Backfish" she instructs, the taxi driver only seeing the cash in his hand gave a thumbs up without any room for argument. Watching now as the demon hurried into her cozy home.
She grabbed a bag, stuffing it with only the essentials and needs to spend a night or two in a town an hour away. Rushing around the place for any extras as well. She hated near a dresser to a portrait leaning upwards, her chest tightened as she stared at it longingly.
After a silent moment dragged on she slowly lowered it to be left unseen. Turning back to her back and leaving the apartment. Looking at her door and heading back into the taxi once more.
"All set girlie?" He asked with a smile, the demon nodded and took that as que to pull onto the road. Yona sighed and slouched into the seat. She'll give her partner a call tomorrow on the new leads on her whereabouts. After all if something were to happen to her mid case then someone else needed to finish it in her stead.
But hopefully that never would become an issue.
The demon leaned her head against the window, looking at her reflection without intentionally doing it. Mint colored eyes boring right back at her, eyebags not too noticeable from the makeup. Flushed cheeks and long black lashes was all she could find. No real love or emotion.
She was fine with this. Surely it's all she could offer to the world as she is. That's at least what she told herself, quite often.
The city's lights whipped from the window, the sun began to set faster than she had hoped. Today flew by faster with all the hunting around, like a snake poking around the kind of nest she shouldn't but if she wasn't, then who else?
"A police officer?" The taxi driver spoke up, driving without a problem. His years of experience seeping through.
Her vibrant mint eyes glanced at him, he was a long lanky guy. Nuzzle up in the air with pride, a strange one. "Detective actually" she says softly, Knowing he meant no harm. The taxi driver made a whistle expression, impressed.
"What a scary job, you're one impressive lady. I remember my sister who wanted to be a ballerina all her life-" her eyes looked away, half listening to what the driver was yapping about. It wasn't getting at all too interesting for her to really care all that much.
She drowned out most of it before she tensed, his words bringing her discomfort more than anything today "But a demon detective! That's quite the feat, society had it bad for that kind of toons. It's good to see some succeeding!".
She fell silent, continuing her search out back at the window. A statement she's heard a million times but somehow never gets easier to hear.
"Yeah, I guess".
The rest of the ride had fallen silent, allowing the demon to fall asleep soon after. Passerbys on the streets started to notice a vibrant orange taxi driving down the main road from New York. It was instinct for these people to notice anything different. Especially a new York taxi out of its jurisdiction.
The driver got antsy, hitting the gas a little more to get out of this sketchy place sooner than later. Shortly arriving at the hotel became easier, reaching for Yona with slight taps to the knee.
"Hey, you're here" he said, backing away as she groaned and stretched. He lowered his voice "It's pretty dangerous out here, do you want me to just take you back?". She yawned, her sharp fangs flashed before blinking and giving a shame "No, thanks for the ride".
She grabbed her bag and opened the car door. "Thanks for the tip" the taxi driver said, getting ready to leave as soon as she got out- which he did. The engine roared as he pulled out and left. She narrowed her eyes around the place, it looked mostly nice and well kept but Backfish was known for the people not the buildings.
Shortly after Yona checked into a room, after pulling out any sheets that came with the room and putting her own down she flopped on the bed. It was a nice room, not the finest but cheap and comfortable for a few nights.
Should I wash? She groaned trying to decide, maybe in the morning.
Her eyelids started to feel heavy, the comforters warming under her body. Sheets clenched under her hands. Perhaps she was more tired than she had thought she was before.
Her mind drifted off, a voice tugging from the deeps of her memories. Yona. Yona.
"Yona" the voice called, a distant tone called. She felt herself looking back to see him. Feeling happy about seeing him.
"Hello sweet girl, what're you doing?". He scooted closer to peer over her shoulder to find the dolls she was making from the plants outside. Something she was very proud of.
He let out a snicker, giving her a head pat. Yona frowned annoyed, her well kept hair getting messy. He let out a sigh, moving his hand away. Their attention immediately drew at the sound of the door opening.
She glanced that way to see a woman walk in with an empty look, glancing to see Yona.
The man and woman began to share expressions that Yona struggled to see, the man caressing her hand then giving it a kiss before she waltzed over to the little Yona.
"Remember to drink milk, Yona" she finally noticed the glass of pearly white liquid in her hand. The woman brushed a finger around Yona's white locks lovingly.
Yona started to reach for it-
She rolled over with a loud groan, the loud banging making her annoyed. Mint eyes opening with pure anger. How dare he come and disturb her while sleeping? Does she not get a break even now. She knew exactly who it was too.
"Detective! Wake up! I know you're in ther-" he paused as he was finally met with the displeased demon. Her brows furrowed deeply making him regret his actions. Don coughed awkwardly.
"I would've called" she said, her tone groggy but still hinting of a threat to leave her alone. Strands of pearly hair were messy and everywhere. Lipstick smeared and yet she looked better for wear.
He looked away at the sight of her messy attire, being mindful of her attire being loose "I apologize Detective, when I got word you were here. I panicked!! I woke up early and drove here" he sighed with a frown. Now seeing he had no reason to be worried in the first place.
"Sorry.." his ears droop, Yona's expression faltered a bit before she stepped back and gestured for him to come in. His brows raised and tail immediately started to wag. He darted in and looked around at the new space.
Her tail whipped the door closed as she retreated back to the bed. Hugging her pillow tightly. They share a moment for silence, giving Yona proper time to process her morning.
